Natural wool has small "scales" that, with the heat and friction of washing, hook together causing the garment to shrink (what we call felting). Use a gentle spin cycle so that the garment is more than damp but not dripping. Then let it dry on a towel and horizontally, that is, spread the garment flat on a surface, giving it the shape of your knit.
